Film Events

Recently, the Queen Elizabeth Hall has been showing feature films to interested locals. The cost, restrictions and organisation for these events have been an interesting topic for us to contemplate. So we are investigating the viability of operating a Cinema Club whereby we could put on a film/films most months. The choice of films could be down to the members of the Cinema Club. The films would be shown in the bar area with the intention of the bar being open on film nights. A new projector and screen would be provided and the cinema club could create its own film program, including themed evenings to bring in enough viewers for each showing to be viable.

The numbers in the bar area are limited to just over 30 people.

To make it work people would have to be members of the Cinema Club and there would be a membership charge – but this would be no more than buying a normal village hall cinema screen ticket. There are legal and technical reasons for this.

Those of us organising this for the Queen Elizabeth Hall would be grateful for any feedback on these proposals.

We mainly need to learn whether there are sufficient people interested in joining so that we can move on to the next stage.

Please email info@qehw.co.uk with ‘Cinema Club’ in the subject heading, so that ideas and interest can be collated by Paul Hemstock, who has been coordinating the film showings and working tirelessly to make the cinema sessions a success.

We would be really grateful for responses – if possible – before the next Committee meeting on 11th March 2019. Thank you.

“The Lunchbox” will be screened at 19.30pm on Friday 15th November in the bar area – tickets are £5 per head – please reserve with Shirley on 01692 406582 – doors open at 18.30pm.

Preceding the film from 18.30pm we will be offering a choice of a Chicken Rendang curry or a vegetarian option. Sweet Potato curry (both with naan bread) at £5 per head.

Please advise us if you have any food intolerances – we will not be using any nuts or nut oil in the recipe. It is essential that tickets for the curry (and, preferably, the film) are reserved for this event – we ask that you advise us whether you want the vegetarian or the meat curry when booking.

So a total of £10 per head for a home-made curry and a fantastic film – great value – and an opportunity to support our film nights. Provided that this event is well-attended we plan to put on future “themed” film nights e.g. “Withnail and I” to be screened on 17th January 2020 with cake and “the finest wines known to humanity”.

The details for the films that were shown on 7/8 July 2018 :

Darkest Hour: 7 July 2018 – tickets sold: 15

Paddington 2: 8 July 2018 – tickets sold: 6

There weren’t many people who came to see the films, but we believe this was due to the clash with the Football World Cup quarter finals, a local wedding, a local party and the Norwich Lord Mayor’s Parade, plus both days being lovely weather.

We have decided to wait to show future films until the New Year and then, hopefully, if we get more of a response, bi-monthly in the winter months.
